Thanks, both of you! I have a sneaky feeling that James Vashon may have been my four times great grandfather, if it was indeed he who fathered an illegitimate... more »

Athill
Someone recently asked about the Athills. But I cant remember who and do not have the email any longer. I think it was a Gateway query. Richard .. I found the Athill work. It is a two part essay in The Colonial Magazine. You can het the Colonial Magazine online if you hunt. You might consider playing around with that. I had lloked up something ("The St Lucia Case" - about Reddie?") in that once. In hunting for the Athill piece I discovered that each number has an index, and if you look in it for St Lucia you can generally find something interesting. The Athill was Porter Athill. He was a judge. He disgraced himself and became a piblic drunk. Henry Percin's sister Sophie sometimes complained about his public drunkenness. He died. HIs wife was left without means and begged the St Lucia authorities to give her some kind of subsistence despite her husband's descent into disgracebut as I recall they would not.... more »
