A favour for a favour
I am giving a friend a hand in getting started on this addictive journey. We got lots done on Scotlandspeople and got her beginning nicely back into the 1800's, next stage as pennies allow. <g> We have a potentially interesting character who we are following back to Newfoundland in WW2 -- any ideas about tracing Newfie genealogy would be most welcome as well... more »

WW1 wounded shipped back to UK?
I'm trying to work out why Private J Walker of the 8th Btn Bedfordshires is buried in Vlissingen (Flushing to some) when the War Diaries for his regiment record that they were "training in billets" on the day he died (17 Nov, 1915) near Poperinge, Ypres (miles from both the coast and the Dutch border). Could he have been being shipped home because of wounds, and the... more »

Marriage Witness Index - great news!
Hello everyone, I have today received from Faye Guthrie in Australia the contents of what should be the most complete version of the UK Witness Index, as created and maintained by Ted Wildy. It arrived in a 14MB Microsoft Access database with just short of 80,000 entries, plus an additional Excel spreadsheet containing a few hundred... more »

Flende ?
I have the birth certificate of the 12th of March 1858 at number 15 Hague Street, Bethnal Green, of Frederick Cox, son of Joseph Cox and what appears to be Eliza FLENDE. Free BMDs has NO-ONE with that surname and without it I'm unable to find her date of birth! She is recorded in the 1861 census together... more »

Wills & Women's Rights?
Some days back, someone mentioned here the DocumentsOnline at TNA. I went over and yesterday purchased two wills, hoping for a breakthrough. Purchase process was slicker'n greased lightening and nearly as fast. It was great! Then I read the wills ... ummm, 1714 and 1752 ... the only person mentioned in either will was the "loving wife" who... more »
