jazz banjo player from the '70s - 80s

I heard an incredible jazz banjo player on the radio in the '80s, well before Bela. This guy was playing straight bebop. Any ideas who would have recorded around or before then?

Years ago I had an Alverez Banjo circa 1977 or 1978. I believe it was a Silver Princess. Is anyone familiar with it? I would consider buying one again if I could find it or something like it.
